THE next meeting of the Bromsgrove branch of the Birmingham and Midland Society for Genealogy and Heraldry is taking place next week with a talk on the ‘History of Longbridge Tunnels’.
The talk is being given by an Austin ex-apprentice Neil Wedgbury, who worked at the factory in Longbridge for 37 years.
He will be giving a presentation of digital slides, showing the underground tunnels and spaces, which were constructed between 1936 and 1962 at the Austin plant. The tunnels and other spaces under Longbridge were mainly built during the second world war, and Neil will be talking about the construction methods used, as well as the location of the tunnels and the state they’re in now.
Neil will also be talking about the way that Longridge was protected during wartime, and what was manufactured there as part of the war effort.
The meeting of the society is taking place on Tuesday, May 10 at Bromsgrove Methodist Centre on Stratford Road, from 7.45pm, and tea and coffee will be available.
The following meeting is already planned to take place on Tuesday, June 14, and will feature ‘An Introduction to Heraldry’ from Ralph Brocklesbank.
