THE second dementia support centre of its kind in England was officially launched in Leominster last week.

A cross-section of society descended on the town's Meeting Centre dementia support project to help celebrate.

The Meeting Centre, on Coningsby Road, is a new dementia support service that caters for people with mild to moderate dementia and carers.

It has been open since February but Leominster's Town Crier opened the launch event last week and a series of speeches were made by people involved in the centre’s journey from inception to launch.

Professor Dawn Brooker has been the research lead from the University of Worcester’s Association for Dementia Studies and spoke about the 'great opportunity' presented by having only the second meeting centre in England in Leominster and the possibilities this might yield for the future.

Cllr Felicity Norman, Mayor of Leominster, said: "We’re delighted to have the Meeting Centre here because we have been developing as a dementia friendly town for the last year."

The Meeting Centre is still open to people with dementia and anyone interested in attending should contact the centre's day support manager for Alzheimer’s Society, Debbie Powney, on 01432 371 137.
