COMMUNITIES in Worcester will be coming together to celebrate the Queen's 90th birthday.

A host of street parties are being planned across the city to celebrate the big day, which takes place on Saturday, June 11.

One of the biggest events will be a community picnic outside DG Den, in Gresham Road, Dines Green, between 2pm and 4pm on Saturday, June 11.

DG Den, run by Worcester Community Trust, is a community facility which aims to provide a diverse range of services for the residents of Dines Green.

The birthday event will include a smoothie bar, a human fruit machine, sports and face painting.

Sarah Turner the Worcester Community Trust’s community co-ordinator, said: "It is a really good opportunity to get people together and create a community atmosphere."

Then on Sunday, June 12, street parties will be taking place in Redfern Avenue, Meadow Road, Yarrow Close and Chubb Close.

Chubb Close will be closed between noon and 9.30pm and residents will celebrate with a host of games, a bouncy castle and a barbecue.

Dominique Bray, who applied for permission for the street party, said: "It is a good excuse to get everyone together and celebrate as well as to meet some new people.

"My kids think the Queen is some kind of miracle worker."

Redfern Avenue will shut between noon and 4pm from its junction with Prestwick Avenue to its junction with Devon Road.

Dee Bruce, organising the street party said: "I think it is a good community event and it is important to celebrate the Royals.

"It is so powerful when you talk to the neighbours and it will be good to get together and celebrate."

Meadow Road will be closed between noon and 11pm with celebrations set to include a barbecue in the evening, after a traditional street party.

Tina Lewis, organising the event, said: "The Queen is an important figurehead and it is definitely worth celebrating."
