A FATHER has slammed the "miserable thief" who stole a handmade door decoration celebrating the birth of his daughter.

Luca Sabia and his wife Marianna, from Worcester, recently celebrated the birth of their first daughter, Sofia, who was born on Monday, March 20.

The couple were excited to share their happy news with their neighbours in Bevington Court, Diglis, and made a pink, heart-shaped decoration to hang outside their house - an idea suggested to them by a neighbour.

However, on Friday, April 21 - just a day after Sofia turned a month old - Mr Sabia discovered someone had stolen the decoration from their front door.

β€œIt was there on Thursday night, and by Friday afternoon it was gone,” said the 37-year-old.

"It was our way to share our news with our neighbours. What a miserable thief."

The couple, who moved to Worcester last year after living in Rome for 20 years, did not report the theft to the police.

They contacted the Worcester News as they thought it was important to share their experience.

"I just want to know why they have done this," added Mr Sabia, who is a doctoral researcher at the University of Worcester Business School.

He said how the community had been "very welcoming" since they moved here, but he and his wife, who is consultant radiologist, want to find out the "rationale" behind the senseless theft.

"We feel very let down," he said.

"We are trying to find out the rationale behind such an episode in what has been defined to be one of the safest cities in the country.

"We are, of course, aware of the fact that in Worcester there are plenty of very friendly and good people.

"However, in such difficult times when the strength of a community is measured also by these aspects, such misconducts could end to be truly detrimental for the wellness of the entire community."
