A WORCESTER man is cycling 100 miles to help children get free cleft surgery.

Stephen Clinton, 65, from Aycliffe Road, Worcester, is taking part in the 100 mile ride through Surrey and London as part of Prudential RideLondon on Sunday, July 30.

Mr Clinton has so far raised £600 for Operation Smile, a charity that helps provide free safe reconstructive surgery to children born with cleft lips and palates around the world.

He chose that charity because his daughter was born with a cleft palate.

He said: “I’m hoping to raise as much as possible.

“I’ve read about cases where 500 people required surgery for cleft lips and palates and they only had enough time to treat 100 people which obviously isn’t good enough.

“For every £150 I raise I can put a smile on a child’s face for the rest of their life, so the more I raise, the more operations I can achieve.

“I’ve been cycling about 140 miles a week for the last two months just to make sure there’s enough in the tank!”

A cleft lip and palate is the most common facial birth defect in the UK, affecting around one in every 700 babies.
