SHHH! It's National Quiet Day today (Thursday, September 14).

National Quiet Day highlights the importance for people to find a little more peace and quiet, encouraging them to take a moment away from the commotion of daily life.

A national survey of 2,000 adults, commissioned for National Quiet Day, has found that 43 per cent of the UK population believe that in the modern world we live in, true silence is impossible to find.

In the West Midlands of England, on average, people are willing to pay £606.20 for just one hour of silence, £296.20 above the national average, which is £310.

Woodlands, the allotment and the beach have been revealed as Britain’s favourite outdoor spaces to get away from the intruding noises of everyday life, with men more likely to take shelter from annoying noises in the garden shed.

One in 10 people blame their partner for making the most annoying noises they have to tolerate on a daily basis, whereas only one in 20 accuse their children.

Home appliance manufacturer Whirlpool commissioned the national survey of 2,000 adults which highlighted the problem of noise in UK households.

The study underlined the everyday noises that affect people the most.

A spinning washing machine topped the list of annoying home appliances, with the dishwasher, microwave and extractor fan following closely behind.
