TWO cyclists are calling on Gloucestershire County Council to build a cycle path and footpath alongside the A429 Fosseway.

Ruth Wright, from Longborough, and Maureen Wyss, from Moreton-in-Marsh, are hoping that the council will reconsider proposals for a cycle path between the village and town.

Ruth said: “The road is dangerous for cyclists and pedestrians. Many cyclists will not cycle it. A purpose built path would encourage many people to cycle or walk alongside the Fosseway.

“If they did that, they would open up all kinds of leisure possibilities. I’ve spoken to a lot of cyclists, and they think it is a stupendously good idea.

“The county council replied that this proposal would be expensive - although they have not costed it - and they are not aware of any ‘planning gain’ money to support it.

“We are undeterred. Parish councils, cycling clubs and others are being consulted. We are considering other ways to get support.

Nigel Moor, county councillor for Stow-on-the-Wold, said: “We appreciate the time and effort that has been put into this proposal. We have commissioned a study along the A429 which includes looking at cycle provisions along the Fosseway.

“We will be exploring what funding may be available once we have received the report later this year.”

The two women are encouraging those who also want a cycle path between Moreton and Longborough to get in touch with Gloucestershire County Council.
