A CAMPAIGN group has been set up in opposition to the proposed development of 50 holiday lodges in a woodland.

The Save Langdale Wood group is campaigning against building accommodation opposite the Three Counties Showground, off Blackmore Park Road, Malvern.

The planning application also proposes the construction of a reception office and opponents believe it will damage local wildlife.

Labour politician Daniel Walton, a former parliamentary candidate for West Worcestershire, thinks Conservative district councillors are pushing through the development in a bid to meet their strategic plan.

But the leader of Malvern Hills District Council (MHDC) has rejected this claim and said the five year plan has no influence over planning considerations.

Mr Walton said: "This is a real odd one in that the planning should no way be approved but pressure is being put on for it be done because the Tories, at MHDC, have been supporting the Three Counties Group as part of their strategic plan for the year.

"What we're calling for is those on the executive committee at MHDC not to be allowed to vote on the application which will be decided before the end of the year.

"Just looking at the site there is no way it should be built on but for political reasons it could happen."

Cllr David Chambers, leader of Malvern Hills District Council, said: “To suggest any planning application is determined on the basis of politics is complete nonsense.

“Our five year plan was approved by council, including members from all parties, and is developed with input from and in full view of the public.

"It does include a strategic aim to support the development of the Three Counties Showground as it has huge benefits for the local economy.

"However, the plan is not a legal document and has no basis or consideration whatsoever in the determination of planning applications."

Cllr Chambers added that the application had been independently assessed and reviewed by planning officers and will be determined on its merits when it comes before the planning committee.
