AN inquest into the death of an 11-year-old who was struck by a lorry on the Birchley Island in Oldbury has been opened and adjourned.

Rowley Regis youngster Kyle Bastable was hit by the vehicle – being driven by DPD driver David Hadley – near the Shell garage on Churchbridge just before 10pm on August 31.

Kyle – who was also known as Joe by his family members - suffered serious injuries and despite the best efforts of medics, was pronounced dead at the scene.

An inquest into the former Rowley Hall Primary School pupil’s death was opened at Black Country Magistrates Court on Thursday (November 16).

Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes, of West Midlands Police's Collision Investigation Unit, said officers are still awaiting final reconstruction test results as to whether Mr Hadley will be prosecuted.

“The plan is to have full file with coroner within four weeks,” DS Hughes told the court. “But that may differ if something comes out of testing which would change where the investigation is expected to be heading.

“There is CCTV evidence from another car which was on the road at the time, but not from the HGV.

“There are several witnesses who saw the incident, or the aftermath. All witnesses have been spoken to, except one who was with Kyle at the time of the incident.

“But due to his age and the other sufficient evidence that I have, I have decided not to put him through the trauma again.”

Assistant coroner Laura Nash adjourned the inquest to January 8.
