A ST GEORGE’S Day parade will take place in a city park this weekend in memory of England’s patron saint.

The annual event is scheduled to start in Gheluvelt Park, Worcester, at noon on Sunday.

The day includes a parade, led by a couple dressed as St George and the Dragon, and a range of other attractions in the park.

There will be games, storytelling, duck racing, candy floss, first aid classes, a bouncy castle and music from the Worcester Ukulele Club and the Fidgets as part of the St George’s Day in the Park event.

The Friends of Gheluvelt Park have organised the bonanza alongside Discover History.

Paul Harding, owner of Discover History, and his fiancée, Helen Lee, will be dressing up as St George and the Dragon.

Mr Harding said: “I will be playing St George.

“Hopefully the weather is going to be brilliant. Gheluvelt Park is the best place to hold a St George’s Day event.

“St George was a great warrior hero and Gheluvelt Park was created by the city council after the First World War to remember all the heroes of the war and of the Battle of Gheluvelt in 1914.

“We always encourage people to dress as St George. The parade starts at the main gate... then proceed into the main part of the park. That’s where the main activities will be.

“The whole event has a great atmosphere. It’s always an honour to do the Gheluvelt Park one.

“It makes the park come alive, especially with the winter we have had.”

Mr Harding, aged 41, estimated that thousands of people attended the last event.

Scouts will also parade through the city on Sunday and there will be a service in Worcester Cathedral at 2.15pm, ahead of St George’s Day on April 23.
