A BURGLAR who cut himself during a bungled break-in was caught red-handed while trying to climb out of a factory window.

Anthony Layton, of Markby Road, Birmingham, is believed to have been bleeding from the hand when officers arrested him at a glass factory in Pickersleigh Avenue, Malvern.

Layton, aged 30, burgled Chance Glass, which is next to the Morgan Motor Company plant, at around 11.50pm on April 22.

He cut himself on a window while breaking into the property, leaving a trail of blood for police officers to follow.

Layton then searched the factory, damaged several doors inside and then smashed another window.

Staff at Chance Glass said the site was a mess after the incident and added that Layton had caused 'pretty bad' damage.

West Mercia Police received a report about the burglary from a member of the public who heard the factory's alarm go off.

Officers rushed to the scene and arrested Layton while he was trying to climb out of a window.

Police also arrested another man believed to be involved in a second Malvern burglary over the weekend.

The male broke into a home in Worcester Road, Malvern, at around 11.48pm on April 20, and made off with the bike, although he was later arrested.

Sergeant Simon Hallam, of Malvern Police Station, said: "Both of these incidents are a good example of local residents acting on their suspicions by reporting matters to 999.

"A quick police response has resulted in the apprehension of two offenders and subsequent charges for the offences.

"I would urge local residents to use these examples as a way forward in the future. Please ensure you call police if you have any concerns."

Layton was jailed for six months and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £115 at Kidderminster Magistrates Court on Tuesday.
