LEDBURY pensioner Gerald Brooke’s fundraising swim to raise funds for St Michael’s Hospice, in memory of his wife, has exceeded his expectations.

More than £5,300 has been raised so far, with more pledges arriving.

Mr Brooke, who swam over 80 lengths in Ledbury Swimming Pool on his 80th Birthday in July, says he has been overwhelmed by the generosity of local people, family and friends, as the money will go towards nursing care at the hospice.

The hospice cared for his wife, Barbara, until her death, aged 72, and since then it has held a very special place in Mr Brooke's heart.

Before taking the splash, last month, Mr Brooke said: "The staff made her feel very comfortable. They eased and cured her pains and allowed her to be as active as possible. It was all about dignity really."

Mr Brooke described his wife as a very reserved person but said the hospice "allowed her to be herself".

Mr Brooke recently met with St Michael’s Fundraising Manager, Paddy Nugent, and also nurses Lorna Bannam and Jane Gennard before being given a guided tour.

He was shown a new cabin style bungalow for informal meetings, conversations and quiet contemplation, the outreach bus, the labyrinth, an art installation fountain and sculpture, wild flowers beds and vegetable garden, education classrooms and a range of other facilities.

Mr Brooke's briefcase contained the money that he presented to the hospice and expressed his gratitude for the care his late wife had received.

Mr Brooke said: "The visit brought back powerful memories and I felt rather melancholy during the visit, yet also uplifted by the wonderful developments at St Michael's, which are provided for the benefit of residents, families and friends."
