INSPECTORS have rated Evesham High School as ‘good’.

All groups of pupils at the school were said to make good progress and their attainment was ‘average’.

The Ofsted report found pupils enjoyed much good and some outstanding teaching. However, inspectors said there was inconsistency in the progress made by sixth form students – which was only ‘satisfactory’ – although this was being addressed in year 13.

According to the report, students learn in an ‘encouraging environment’ and responded well to strong teaching.

GCSE results in 2011, particularly in English and maths, showed strong improvement on the previous year, with the proportion of pupils getting higher grades in English rising dramatically.

In some areas, however, the inspectors found missed opportunities to challenge pupils as much as possible.

Despite this, the report said the quality of teaching was improving, the curriculum was expanding and that the students’ achievements were rising.

Pupils with special needs were said to make the same progress as their peers. Inspectors found pupils had high attendance records and showed respect to each other and teachers.

The inspectors also said that morale at Evesham High School was high among the staff.

Headteacher Caroline Browne said: “We were really pleased. We are very proud to be an inclusive school so we are never going to make excuses for children who make fabulous progress, but don’t get the best results. We are proud to offer education to everyone in the area.

“There are still some areas to improve and we know that and we will get on with it.”
