FIRE chiefs warn residents to check smoke alarms when changing the clocks.

Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service (GFRS) is encouraging residents to use the clocks going back this Sunday as an opportunity to make sure smoke alarms are working correctly.

The service’s advice is that there should be at least one smoke alarm on each level of every home and they should be checked regularly to ensure they are working.

With the majority of fire deaths in the home there are either no smoke alarms in place or they did not go off, with a common cause being missing or flat batteries.

If you know of a vulnerable person who doesn’t have a working smoke alarm, GFRS has a supply of alarms that can be supplied and fitted for free just by ringing 0800 180 41 40.

Chief Fire Officer Stewart Edgar said: “Anyone can spot when a clock stops ticking, but it’s not so easy to be sure that your smoke alarm is still in working order.

“With the clocks change, it is the perfect opportunity to test alarms for yourself and your family, and even older relatives who might find it hard to reach their alarms.

“By pushing the test button on every smoke alarm in your house, you could save the lives of your nearest and dearest.”

Cllr Nigel Moor, cabinet member for fire, planning and infrastructure said: “We would encourage all residents to test their alarms regularly.

“They could save your family's life one day, and if your alarm isn't working or you don't have one, do not delay - get one today."

The service provides Safe and Well checks free of charge. Just go to www.glosfire.gov.uk or call 0800 180 4140 to arrange a visit.
