HEREFORD River Carnival is back this weekend and introduces Friday night entertainment and an area focused on sport.

The carnival takes place next to the River Wye in Hereford in Bishops Meadow, King George V playing fields and Castle Green.

And new for this year, there will be street theatre tomorrow (Friday) night from 8pm as performers, musicians, dancers and rafters bring the creatures of the Mappa Mundi to life journeying from the cathedral to Bishops Meadow.

The event features a fire garden on Bishops Meadow and torch-lit floats on the River Wye.

Then on Saturday at 10am the carnival opens with a fun dog show on Castle Green.

New for 2017 is the Carnival of Sport which promotes fitness, health and wellbeing by encouraging everyone to come along a try something new.

It starts at 11am and there will be sessions for men, women, girls and boys- no experience or kit are necessary.

There is also an indie food village this year including Beefy Boys, Rule of Tum, Rocket Kitchen, Peter Cooks Bread, Method Roastery, Trumpers’ Teas, Seb’s Cider and the Old Granary Pierogi.

At 11.15am the CHAR sprint raft race on the Wye takes place; at 12.30pm live music starts on the Nozstock stage, at 1pm there is a street carnival through Hereford (gather at the Castle Green at 12.30pm) and at 2.15pm the river carnival starts. The City of Hereford Rotary Club Duck Race is at 3.30pm.
