A SERVICE to remember the Polish soldiers buried in Leominster is to take place this Sunday.

The soldiers died at the Barons Cross Camp but there were many other Polish ex-service people in the area in the immediate post-war years – around 1,200 at Shobdon for example.

The Polish armed forces played a critical role in the early days of the war, especially in the Battle of Britain, and later fought alongside us in the Middle East, North Africa and Italy.

An inaugural service which took place last year was well attended and this year's will take place on Sunday, November 26 at 12.30pm at the site of the graves in Leominster Cemetery (not the Priory churchyard).

Joe Cocker, organiser of the event, said: "Anyone interested in learning more about these graves and what they represent should please get in touch. We could meet to discuss what is known and how we could find out more.

"We are also considering a coach trip, possibly next march, to the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire.

"One of the most impressive memorials there is to the Polish Armed Forces and includes a recognition of the part Poland played in breaking the Nazi enigma code.

"On the way back we could visit the superb RAF Museum at Cosford which has a good collection of Second World War aircraft."

Entrance to both places is free so the only cost would be the coach journey leaving Leominster around 8.30am and returning about 17.30pm.
