HAGLEY-born soprano Paula Downes has sprung to the rescue of Stourbridge based Gig Caritas and is set to perform as the headline act at a charity concert this weekend.

Internationally acclaimed singer Paula, who is now based in Cambridge, has stepped in to appear at Holy Trinity Church in Wordsley on Saturday March 25 after original singer Nina-Maria Fischer, who had planned to fly in from Berlin, was forced to pull out of the performance.

Paula will join around 100 members of Stourbridge Chamber Orchestra and the Restoration Chorus who will be performing an evening of choral classics under the experienced baton of Keith Horsfall.

The classics will include Vivaldi's Gloria, the Hallelujah and Amen choruses from Handel's Messiah and Meddelssohn's O for the Wings of a Dove.

All of the performers appearing for free as funds raised from the event will be donated to Brierley Hill Samaritans.

The concert starts at 7.30pm.

Tickets are priced £10 and will be available on the door on the night or online through www.gigcaritas.com
