A SPEED camera van has been parked at the bottom of a hill in Worcester this morning to protect pedestrians following a series of accidents on the road.

The van was parked near Altafs Balti in Tolladine Road this morning following 15 collisions in three years. One reader wrote to the Worcester News complaining that the camera was a 'stealth measure' being employed by the safer roads partnership because one of the signs is only around 50 yards before the van as motorists drive down the hill towards Worcester.

He said: "It appears the Safer Road Partnership has resorted to stealth measures. I phoned the said party to ask where the signage was leading to the new location for the van.

"I was assured signage is not required but did exist. I went back to find it. Indeed it does but only about 50 yards (approximately) ahead of the van's position at the and at the bottom of the lengthy decline leading to it. Is this another example of the shameful hounding of driving community in Worcester?"

There are permanent speed camera signs either side of where the van was parked in Tolladine Road.

Vicki Bristow, communications manager for Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police Safer Roads Partnership, said: "During the three years prior to end of 2013 along the site length there have been 12 collisions causing slight injury and three collisions causing serious injury. Along the specific enforcement area these have all involved pedestrians and all are speed related. 15 per cent of vehicles are travelling at 35.5mph or over in a 30mph limit. This is why we are enforcing in this area. There are camera warning signs in place."
