AROUND 200 people gathered to see the Evesham Tree of Light switched on by the town's mayor.

The lights on the 90 foot tree were shining brightly in memory of those who will not be here this Christmas.

The tree in Evesham High Street, which is organised by the Rotary Club of Evesham raises money for both rotary and local charities as people donate in order to dedicate a light to a loved one who is no longer here.

Cllr Richard Jones, mayor of Evesham, led the countdown to the tree lights being switched on, with Alan Hudson, secretary of the Hereford Wye Valley Rotary Club and the president of the Evesham Rotary Club, Chris Bloomfield also in attendance.

The interact clubs at Prince Henry's High School and The De Montfort School also helped with the event, with the choir at Prince Henry's treating the watching crowds to renditions of popular Christmas carols.

Visitors tucked into mulled wine and mince pies as they got themselves into the festive spirit.

Evesham Rotarian Steve Davies, also at the switch-on, said: "It was a spectacular evening. A very poignant way of remembering those who will not be here this Christmas.

"The two schools were really helpful and the Prince Henry's choir sung some gorgeous carols."

A spokesman for the event said: "The club was delighted to be able to announce that donations had at least matched, and probably slightly exceeded last year's figure. Thank you to the people of Evesham who always give so generously to this event."

Evesham residents can convey a message for family and friends or commemorate a loved one at Christmas time.
