A BROMSGROVE family say excessive speeding on the A38 has forced them to move out of their home, after police and highways turned down their cry for help.

Richard Gilder appealed to West Mercia Police and Worcestershire County Council to lower the 40mph speed limit due to speeding, traffic, and noise pollution outside his home.

He said his family lived in fear every time they pulled off their drive in their car, and no longer felt safe walking their children to nearby Lickey End First School.

Mr Gilder, 38, who moved to the A38 Birmingham Road in Lickey End in 2013, said: “I have stopped walking my child to school alongside the road as a lot of drivers operate a mobile phone whilst driving.

“Sometimes drivers act aggressively, speeding up when they see me or my wife trying to pull out of our drive in our car. I am always concerned when turning into the drive.

“My father has asked me to move home the past three years as he is adamant that a car will hit us when our children are in the car.

“Over the past two years, I have written multiple times to the MP for Bromsgrove, cllr Rita Dent, Worcestershire council, the highways agencies and the police.

“There has been nothing but emails, letters and no action.

“I am concerned by the increasing traffic from new retail outlets and housing estates with no increasing road infrastructure, but mostly the lack of willingness to confront the very real traffic issues we have in Bromsgrove.

“I am left with the only option being to move and seek a better environment for my family as soon as I can afford to.”

Police conducted a review into the road in January, finding 85 per cent of vehicles drove at or below 39.2mph – thus ruling it out for speed enforcement.

A West Mercia Police spokesman said: “This shows the majority of drivers are complying with the posted 40 mph speed limit so does not meet our criteria for speed enforcement.

“We have liaised with Worcestershire County Council to look at alternative solutions which may include engineering measures.”

Jon Fraser, head of highways at Worcestershire County Council, added: “As a major route carrying a high volume of traffic the A38 is not suitable for any form of traffic calming.

“In recent years, as part of a county-wide review of speed limits on A-roads, it was found that 40mph is the correct speed limit.”

Last year, £7.5 million was pledged for A38 road and junction improvements, including widening, realignment, and signal upgrades.
