A PROJECT to extend the Rhydd Covert activity centre run by Kidderminster Scouts has reached a major fund-raising landmark thanks to a National Lottery grant.

The next Generation Appeal has been boosted by £10,000 from the Awards For All scheme which has taken the amount of money raised so far to £100,000.

Kidderminster & District Scouts launched the appeal just over a year ago to enhance its Rhydd campsite and centre located next to West Midland Safari Park by adding a 22-bed extension.

The lottery award comes just as the first phase of building work has been completed and will be used to refurbish and extend existing shower and toilet facilities.

The second phase of the £110,000 project is expected to begin soon and it is hoped the dormitory extension will be open early next year.

The new facilities will open up opportunities for more young people to learn important life skills in a fun environment and will also add extra space for indoor activities and training.

John Beard, president of Kidderminster Scouts, said: “We have made terrific progress in the last 12 months and we are indebted to the local community for their support.

“We recently raised £4,000 from our Grand Raffle and we could not have done that without the support of so many people who bought and sold tickets and donated prizes.”
