LICKEY End First School has issued parents a warning over speeding outside the school and drivers “disregarding” speed bumps - leading to one “near miss”.

The school sent an email to parents last month.

It read: “We are aware of some incidents occurring around the crossing of Alcester Road, with cars disregarding speed bumps and travelling too fast.

“In particular today there was a near miss on the zebra crossing with the driver failing to stop.

“We would like to urge you to exercise extreme caution and close supervision of children, particularly with current low winter sun and other potential weather conditions.”

Parent Richard Gilder, 38, who lives on nearby Birmingham Road and takes his daughter to the school, has asked the police and highways to improve safety in the area.

He said: “I honestly believe that the council and police are not doing enough to stop speeding in my area. I really do not wish for a child to be killed.”

Highways chief Jon Fraser said measures have been put in place to improve safety.

He added: “Some highway safety measures surrounding Lickey End First School such as a humped zebra crossing, speed cushions on B4096 Alcester Road and School Lane and a raised platform at the Alcester Road/School Lane junction were introduced several years ago through the council's 'Safer Routes to School' program.

“These were introduced following substantial consultation with local residents and users of the school.”
