PLANS to restore the historic Horsefair clock to its former glory have been given a boost after Kidderminster Town Council agreed to adopt it.

Members unanimously supported Councillor Sarah Rook’s proposal, put forward at a full council meeting, and also agreed to donate £1,500 towards the project.

Volunteer group Horsefair and Proud, along with Councillors Rook, Steve Walker, Mary Rayner and Peter Young, are looking to raise £14,000 to bring back the timepiece that was in place outside The Old Peacock.

Earlier this year, the launched a fundraising appeal to help cover the costs of restoration.

The Horsefair clock was erected in 1912 in honour of businessman and councillor Fred Oakes and stood for more than 50 years before it was removed in 1969.

After the meeting, Councillor Rook said. “I am really grateful for the support my fellow councillors have shown for this project.

“The Horsefair is a gateway to our town centre, improving this part of town will encourage people to visit our shops and help the local economy, so it makes perfect sense for us to throw our support behind it.”

Dawn Anglin, chair of Horsefair and Proud, said: “I am overwhelmed by the generosity and support that people have shown to this ambitious project.

“It has really bought people and groups together and the full support of our town council is another example of that.

“We have raised most of the money in a very short period of time, but it’s not too late for people to get involved in fundraising initiatives, anybody who can help get us over the line can contact Horsefair and Proud.”
