A FATHER-to-be told police he wanted to curb his cannabis use after being arrested for possessing the class B drug on August 12 this year.

Prosecuting, Sarah Belshah said at around 9pm that night, police offers were out on patrol and saw 22-year-old Sean Graham Lucitt, walking near his home address of Cherwell Close, Worcester.

"Police were alerted to him because he was carrying an Adidas bag across his body and appeared to be holding it tightly to him," said Miss Belshah.

She said their suspicion was aroused and they stopped and searched him and found seven one-gramme packets of cannabis with a total street value of £70.

Lucitt pleaded guilty to the offence at Worcester Magistrates' Court on Friday.

Defending, Barry Newton told the court that Lucitt had purchased the drug shortly before police stopped him and that because of previous convictions for possession, there was no question that it was for anything other than his own use.

But Mr Newton said his client wanted help.

"His girlfriend is expecting their first child in January and he wants to reduce or stop his use of cannabis. He would be willing to undertake a rehabilitation programme," said Mr Newton.

District Judge Nigel Cadbury told Lucitt he was glad he was willing to do something about his cannabis use and said the threat of prison hanging over him was an incentive to do well.

He gave him a six week prison sentence suspended for nine months with a supervision order for six months and a drug rehabilitation requirement for three months.

Lucitt was also ordered to pay costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £80. A forfeiture and destruction order was made for the cannabis.
