WORK to improve traffic flow and create a crossing on a Worcester road has begun, but one resident has claimed it is "unsafe" for pedestrians.

The work is being carried out to construct a left-hand filter lane from  the Northern end of Woodgreen Drive into Cotswold Way, to mitigate future traffic flow growth.

A controlled pedestrian crossing is also set to be constructed on the road, located just to the south of the 'Old Tolladine Road Greenway.

However, a resident of Homestead Avenue says the work is an accident "waiting to happen" for residents.

Mrs Sam Hodgkinson, 41, said: "You come out of Homestead Avenue then there's no pavement, so there is nothing to walk on and you're straight in the road.

"People are at risk, and there are a few using pushchairs. It's unsafe for them.

"I do not drive so I have to do this, so now I only go out if I have to.

"It's a housing estate in Homestead Avenue so there are a lot of people here who are effected. There will be an accident sooner rather than later."

Councillor John Smith says the residents' safety was taken into account, and diversion routes were set up when the work begin at the beginning of January.

Cllr Smith OBE, county council cabinet member for Highways, said: "We take the safety of pedestrians very seriously and when the work started earlier this month safe, signed diversion routes for people walking from Homestead Avenue were put in place, which link up with Cotswold Way via Wood Piece Close.

"We understand the diversion signage at the junction of Homestead Avenue and Woodgreen Drive could benefit from improvement, and as soon as this was raised by residents new signage was ordered. Improvements should be carried out in the next few days."

He also said once the works are completed, the flow of traffic will be improved and pedestrians will be safer than they were before.

"The scheme in Woodgreen Drive will improve the flow of traffic in the area by widening the carriageway to provide a left turn lane for drivers heading towards the city.

"We apologise for any inconvenience this may be causing, but the good news for pedestrians is that as part of these works we're also installing a controlled pedestrian crossing, between the bus stop and the old Tolladine Road, so ultimately crossing the road there will be much safer."
