A TRAILBLAZING chemist from Worcester is to present her research into how different medications can help in the fight against cancer in Parliament next week.

Early career fellow at the University of Warwick Dr Rebecca Kaner is taking part in the Chemistry section of the SET for Britain competition on Monday, March 9.

The 26-year-old was shortlisted from hundreds of applicants to take part in the national competition promoting the work of the county’s newest scientists.

Dr Kaner said: “I applied to take part in SET for Britain as I want to promote the work I and my colleagues do to a wider audience.

“I hope to engage people from all backgrounds and disciplines with some of the very exciting possibilities that are coming out of my research.”

Each section of the competition includes gold, silver and bronze prizes, with prizes of up to £3,000 awarded.

Professor Helen Fielding from the Royal Society of Chemistry – which runs the competition along with a range of other science, mathematics and engineering societies – described the work of the entrants as “inspirational”.

“Inspiring young people into science is also crucial for the UK’s economic growth and job creation,” she said.

“We hope that many more talented scientists like these finalists have the opportunity to contribute to society.

“I’m thrilled to see such excellent and inspiring science going to Parliament.”
