"SOMEONE is going to get run over," that is the view of one resident living near Worcestershire Royal, following mounting concerns over street parking.

Andy Hurn, aged 40, who lives with his wife Carly and two children in Hoskyns Avenue, believes there will be a "major accident" if something is not done to reduce the amount of cars parking in residential streets near the hospital.

Mr Hurn said that daily there are at least 40 cars in Shaftesbury Green, Rowntree Gardens, Hoskyns Avenue, Collings Avenue that "don't belong" in those streets.

He believes about 20 per cent are hospital staff and the rest are nearby office workers.

"Someone is going to have a major accident here. It will be at the junction of Collings Avenue and Hoskyns Avenue," he said.

"It goes down a hill approaching the roundabout - you are not going to be able to see until the last second.

"I had to go on the opposite side of the road to go round the roundabout - if someone comes in the other direction I will get blind-sided.

"Someone is going to get run over because it is a blind corner.

"I know at least seven out of the nine houses near my own get worked up about.

"Any of the emergency service vehicle trying to get down Shaftesbury Green wouldn't be able to get through."

He and fellow residents are concerned about the safety of disabled pedestrians and those using pushchairs as he says they are forced to walk out into the road as the pathways and even the roundabout is taken up by cars.

"You have to go in the road - there is no choice," he said.

"People have to walk in the road - that includes children - that is because of it. Because you've got to get around these cars.

"It's about safety really and also if you've got someone coming round obviously, because they've got to park four streets away and bother someone else in the area. It is moving the issue somewhere else."

Previously, a Worcestershire County Council made an order to prohibit waiting at any time on part of Hoskyns Avenue.

But Mr Hurn is appealing to the council to put an order in place on Shaftesbury Green, Rowntree Gardens, Hoskyns Avenue, Collings Avenue, similar to that on Leopard Rise, so cars cannot park between 10am and 4pm.

A spokesman for Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust said: "We currently have more than 1,200 car park spaces on site for staff and visitors, and a further 141 spaces are due to be created over the next 12 months.

"The Trust has also taken active steps to alleviate parking issues by providing a free park and ride facility for staff at Sixways.

"Where staff do choose to park in alternative locations, we would of course remind them to park considerately."

A Health and Care Trust spokesman said: "There are some Health and Care Trust staff based on the site (Kings Court complex) and while additional on-site car parking capacity is being developed we will remind all our staff to think about travel plans, including care sharing to alleviate pressure, and if parking in the surrounding area to ensure they do so with consideration for local residents."

A Worcestershire County Council spokesman said "We are aware of ongoing issues with parking in Warndon Villages and are regularly looking at ways to improve the situation on Hoskyns Avenue, and the surrounding areas."
