A teacher with a head for heights took to the skies to mark the end of an era.

When Ann Eyles retired from Upton Snodsbury CE First School, her colleagues were determined to give her a leaving present she would never forget, so they enlisted the help of former student Rob Newman.

Mr Newman, of Sky High Advertising, is used to flying a Second World War-vintage Boeing Stearman to tow banners in the sky, but was only too happy to treat his former teacher to the breathtaking views of her school.

The 38-year-old was taught by Mrs Eyles when she started work at the school. She then went on to teach his five-year-old son Scott before retiring.

Mrs Eyles, aged 55, said Monday's flight, which took off from Defford airstrip, near Pershore, was exhilarating.

"I was a bit nervous at first, but I think that was the excitement," she said.

"When we flew over the school, all the children and teachers came out and waved.

"It took time to come back down to earth because I was still buzzing - it was fantastic.

"It was just so different and nice to see the school from a different angle and a new perspective."

The half-hour flight took in the spectacular views of Worcester Cathedral and the city's New Road cricket ground, where Elton John performed on Sunday.

"It was brilliant," added Mrs Eyles. "With the open cockpit, you really felt as if you were out there."

Mrs Eyles said she now plans to work as a supply teacher and will return to the school shortly, when she will see pupils and colleagues again.
