MORE music superstars could be heading for Worcester following the storming success of Elton John's concert at the weekend.

More than 17,000 people were at Worcestershire County Cricket Ground on Sunday to see the Rocket Man belt out his hits.

Now the club's chief executive Mark Newton has said they hope to build on the success of the event by staging further concerts at the 20,000-capacity venue.

He suggested performers such as The Eagles could be next on the cards if a promoter was prepared to put them on and their appearance did not clash with match dates.

But he ruled out appearances by the likes of Robbie Williams, Madonna and the Rolling Stones, who would command a bigger venue.

He said the ground would best suit performers who had enjoyed success some time ago and were now enjoying a renaissance. "As far as the future's concerned, the promoters were very happy with everything we provided and we'd love to put something on like this every year but it depends on who's available.

"It is down to a promoter, because we'd never take the financial risk of staging the whole thing. I can, however, guarantee the wish is there to do it," he said.

The cricket ground is no stranger to music stars, having played host to the XS Concerts in 2003 and 2004 in which Blue, Atomic Kitten, Petula Clark and Busted performed. Mr Newton said the Elton show was the first time New Road had put on such a big event where the positive feedback organisers had received far outweighed any negative comments.

"Everything about it went really well - far better than one could hope for, we can always do better in the future by ironing out any operational difficulties."

Labourers were busy finishing returning the ground to its normal state yesterday. The pitch was not been damaged during the concert.
