THOUSANDS of Race for Life runners are being urged to remember the race to the fund-raising finishing line has only just begun.

Organisers of Worcester's Cancer Research UK event have urged the 5,500 women and girls who took part on Sunday to hand in their sponsorship - to help the charity find ways to help cure cancer faster.

Race organiser Rebecca Hillyard said: "It was an absolutely fantastic day with an unbelievable atmosphere - everyone took part because they, or someone they know, has been touched by cancer.

"I just want to say well done and thank you to all the participants, volunteers and spectators for making it such a memorable day."

This year, organisers hope to smash the city's fund-raising target of £330,000.

Rachel Roxburgh, head of Race for Life, said: "It is not too late to return any money or make a donation. Every contribution makes a difference to the work of Cancer Research UK."

Runners had to brave the heat on Sunday, running and walking in temperatures which were in the 80s.

The 5km course started at Worcester Racecourse, before leading the women out into the city centre streets.

In previous years, the course has been more centred on the racecourse but, this year, organisers decided to encourage a better flow of runners by bringing them out on to the streets.

There was cranberry juice and water at the High Street finishing line for the runners. One exhausted woman collapsed at the end of the race, but was fine after being checked over by paramedics.
