MORE than 1,500 children from 20 primary schools across Worcester will come together for a school proms in the park.

The youngsters will perform at Gheluvelt Park’s recently-refurbished Vict-orian bandstand during a week-long programme of performances next month.

People are being encouraged to go along to the free event at the Barbourne park and to take picnics to make it a great day out.

The proms will start on Monday, July 4, and will end with a grand finale featuring the Worcestershire Youth Brass Band on Friday, July 8.

Each day there will be two performances – one at 11am and one at 1.30pm.

The children will play popular tunes including Land of Hope and Glory, Fantasia on British Sea Songs and Jerusalem, as well as music from the stage and screen during a two hour concert. They will also enjoy storytelling and a walkabout in the park.

The event has been organised by Nicky Daw, area director for Worcestershire Youth Music, along with Worcester City Council and the library service.

“The reaction to the proms has been absolutely fantastic – really positive. The kids are really, really excited and people are actually asking me if they can book seats for the last night,” she said “The school proms in the park is a great performance opportunity for the children – they get to play in a wonderful place and play with other schools as well.

“The whole thing will lead up to the last night, which every person taking part in the week has been invited back to watch and experience a proper last night at the proms.”
