A TEENAGER who smashed up the inside of a police van was angry he had been arrested for drug offences, a court was told.

Adam Watkins, aged 19, of Poplar Avenue, Brickfields, Worcester, faced seven offences when he appeared before city magistrates.

Watkins admitted possession of cannabis, possession of ketamine, obstructing a PC in the execution of his duties, possession of amphetamines, damaging a police vehicle without lawful excuse, driving otherwise than accordance with a licence and driving without insurance.

Matt Dodson, prosecuting, said Watkins was refused entry to Lanes bowling alley in Bromyard Road on Friday, June 3, and had become “aggressive”.

Police officers arrived and one recovered clear bags containing amphetamines. Watkins told officers: “It’s amphet. It’s nothing.”

Mr Dodson said: “He said ‘I’m not getting arrested’. Officers attempted to reason with him but he said ‘There’s no way I’m coming with you tonight’. They warned him he would be CS sprayed and this appeared to calm him.

“He then pulled away and ran out of the car park. They lost sight of him in Bromyard Road.”

At 1am the following morning he was spotted driving a van in Deansway, Worcester, and he was arrested.

Mr Dodson said: “The officers tried to place handcuffs on him but he violently resisted.” When he was placed in a police van a light fitting was damaged which was intact when he was put in the van.

Mr Dodson said: “When he was transported they could hear him smashing the light. This was confirmed when they arrived at custody.”

When he got to the police station he was searched and they recovered a bag containing white powder and Watkins told them: “You know what it is – it’s speed.”

Watkins was earlier arrested in the Diglis area of Worcester on Thursday, May 5, where he was found to have pink tablets identified as ketamine and 9.7g of cannabis in grip-sealed bags.

Andy Childs, defending, said: “He’s not in the premier league of offenders. It seems this offending occurs on the spur of the moment and is not really thought through.”

Watkins, who was married before the relationship broke down, is now living with his mother.

Magistrates placed him on a 7pm to 7am curfew as part of his bail conditions.

He will be sentenced on Wednesday, June 29.
