A MALVERN man stole a bank card from a vulnerable young woman who let him and a friend stay the night at her flat, and took £90 out of her account.

Ashley Dunn, aged 22, of Skyrrold Road and a friend met the 17-year-old on February 6.

They went back to her flat to have some drinks, prosecutor Sarah Stock told Worcester magistrates.

Dunn and his friend persuaded her to let them stay the night.

The next morning, she had to leave for an appointment, and they again persuaded her to let them stay in the flat while she was out.

“She texted Mr Dunn to tell him that she was trusting him and he was to behave himself,” Mrs Stock told the court.

But while she was out Dunn took the card, which he had seen her use earlier, and used it to withdraw £90 from a cash machine.

Dunn pleaded guilty to one charge each of theft and fraud.

Barry Newton, for Dunn, said that a few years ago, Dunn had spent 11 months in custody on remand, accused of a series of arson offences, for which he was subsequently acquitted.

A promising career as a goalkeeper, which Mr Newton said could have seen him playing professionally, was cut short by a shoulder injury, and subsequently hand injury, that also left him unable to work in the building trade.

Worcester magistrates heard that at the time of the offence, he was serving a suspended sentence for an earlier offence.

After deliberation, the magistrates sentenced him to eight weeks in prison.
