WORCESTER’S emergency services were joined by local rescue units as they gathered for a Community Safety day at Pitchcroft.

Children and adults enjoyed demonstrations of firefighters rescuing people from smoke-filled areas and cutting cars as they would on the scene of an accident during the event on Saturday.

Firemen took pictures with visitors in their fire engines and the police and ambulance services also showed the vehicles they use to the public.

Alice Gillett was at the event with her children and husband who is a fireman.

She said: “We always come along and Mark, my husband, often works them. The kids are enjoying it and they have been sitting in the fire engine.”

Station Commander Chris Churchill said he hoped the bad weather of recent days didn’t stop people coming to the event.

“If the weather holds up we would hope to see as many people as last year,” he said.

“There are arena displays, cranes, and for the first time the Mountain Bikes rescue team from the Malvern Hills are here.”

Flood rescue teams were also at the event and were taking the opportunity to give safety advice.

Tom Smith, of the Severn Area Flood Association, said they were on high alert after the heavy rain.

He said: “This event gives us the chance to talk to adults and children about how to be safe around water.”

Many of the emergency services use the event as a change to meet members of the public.

Police Sergeant Jill Fowler said: “This is part of our community engagement. It is very important for us to be here. We meet people we wouldn’t ordinarily meet.”
