Oxford University Aim High Visit
 |
| Outside the World famous Bodleian Library |
A group of year 10 students from Elgar Technology College recently enjoyed an inspiring and challenging day out at Oxford University. The students were part of a visit to the University arranged for Gifted and Talented students from Worcester Secondary schools under the Aim High initiative.
On arrival, the students were informed about opportunities within University life, followed by a Material Science experimental lesson. Material Science combines biology, chemistry and physics and is aimed at application of science in the real world. A group of under graduates then took the students on a tour of the World famous Bodleian Library followed by Merton College - looking where they were able to view the accommodation and facilities.
A welcome lunch in the refectory was followed by a 'Scavenger Tour' in the afternoon, a challenge the students welcomed wholeheartedly. The tasks, set in the city centre involved students taking photographs meeting various criteria. This really stretched the imagination of students and the Elgar students who had teamed up with a group from another school, were delighted to find they won the challenge after meeting all the targets in a highly creative style. The day ended with a very informative feedback session giving the students an opportunity to ask questions.
Elgar's Consultant Head teacher Tim Gallagher said "It was a delightful day's experience and superb hospitality at Oxford. The whole day was very informative and fun, and the student behaviour and learning superb. The day provided a good insight into University life."
