World Maths Day
Wednesday 5th March was World Maths Day, and students at Elgar Technology College did their best to get involved. This was the second annual World Maths Day, and the intention was to get students around the world competing against each other online to answer mental arithmetic questions.
The organisers were hoping to set a world record by having 50 million questions answered correctly during the day. Altogether more than 1 million students registered on the website, and the world record was achieved after just 12 and a half hours. Elgar students contributed 2,652 correct answers to the global tally.
Unfortunately the website could not cope with the global demand, especially during the morning, and some of our students had quite a frustrating time trying to get connected, but congratulations to all the students who took part in the afternoon, and to all of those who had a go in their own time after school.
We are always looking for ways to enrich our students' mathematical experience, and this was a fantastic opportunity for us to be involved in. Hopefully the technical problems experienced with the website will be resolved before next year's World Maths Day, and even more of our students will be able to participate in this global event.
