Reading Champions @ Elgar
To celebrate World Book Day and National Year of Reading, Elgar Technology College invited local sportsmen, businessmen and representatives from the Police and Fire Brigade to come to the Library and chat to students about their experiences of reading both now and in the past. The Worcester News came in and made a video of the event which can be seen on their website.
Guests included; Andrea Maddox and Wilf Talbot from Mentor Link, David Cooper from Crusader Sports, Geoff Carter from Carter Graphics, Chief Inspector Matt Read, representing the Chief Constable of West Mercia Police, Mark Rice from St Peter's Garden Centre, Amanda Watkins our local Community Support Officer and her colleague Jon Townsend. From Worcester Fire Brigade; Crew Manager Antony Richardson, Brian Thompson and Fire Fighter Darren Greenwood and representing Worcester Warriors Rugby Club; Craig Gillies, Dale Rasmussen and Drew Hickey. They all enjoyed chatting to the students and many said that they hadn't realised how knowledgeable about books the students would be. The students were impressed by the fact that so many people had given up their time to come in and talk to them about reading and its importance. The guests will be nominated as Local Reading Champions with the Literacy Trust and will receive certificates and badges as recognition of their commitment.
