THE University of Worcester, the county's leading sports clubs and npower joined forces to launch a Learning through Sports Day to help children experience fun and gain knowledge.

About 200 youngsters were invited to the university's St John's campus yesterday for a day of sports activities led by university lecturers and players and coaches from Worcestershire County Cricket Club (WCCC), Worcester Warriors rugby and Worcester Wolves basketball teams.

The day was also designed to show support to WCCC following last year's floods and involved a trip to New Road for children to play kwik cricket and to watch Worcestershire play Gloucestershire.

The children each received souvenir T-shirts, urban cricket sets and junior memberships for WCCC for the current season.

Mick Donovan, University of Worcester principal sports lecturer and director of Worcester Wolves basketball, said: "The aim of this event was to promote children's participation in sport, encourage learning and show that sporting and educational organisations in Worcestershire are determined to show their support to Worcestershire County Cricket Club in its recovery from last year's disastrous floods."

Mark Newton, chief executive of Worcestershire County Cricket Club, said: "We hope this Learning through Sport Day will become a regular event in the calendar.

"The university, the participating clubs and npower all play an important part in the fortunes of the city of Worcester and Worcestershire."
