Law firm’s backing for young musicians

WORCESTER firm Harrison Clark solicitors is providing money from its charitable trust to fund an annual scholarship for a talented young musician to train at the Elgar School of Music in the city.

The trust was set up last autumn by the firm to raise money for local community projects across Worcestershire.

The Elgar School of Music is one of the first charities to benefit. It is housed in specially adapted buildings in Deansway, which provide attractive and well-equipped studios for individual and small ensemble tuition, together with a recital room for performance and group activities.

Students of all ages can enjoy the very best in musical education, whether as an academic or leisure pursuit.

The school holds regular concerts and workshops and each year holds a festival in the early summer.

It boasts an excellent success rate in external music examinations and festivals which can be attributed to its high standards of teaching.

The scholarship, worth about £500 annually, will be open to any young musician of school age across the county and teachers will be invited to put forward candidates for audition.

The scholarship will alternate each year between a string and then a woodwind player.

Gill Lumsdon, administrative head of the Elgar School of Music, said: "We are absolutely delighted to receive this generous donation from Harrison Clark and we hope it will enable talented local musicians who might otherwise not have that opportunity, to benefit from the individual tuition offered by the Elgar School."

Robert Capper, head of the commercial department at Harrison Clark, added: "Worcester has a reputation for turning out some of the country's finest musicians and we look forward to following the careers of our scholarship winners."
