Members attended the annual federation of Recorded Music Societies' weekend at Daventry, where the first speaker was the eminent pianist John Lill, in conversation with society vice-president Lyndon Jenkins.
Brian Godfrey talked about the Chelsea Opera Group, and Christopher Fifield asked the audience to "follow this conductor's downbeat view."
Mr Fifield will be visiting the CMS on December 5, to present a programme of recorded music entitled the Symphonic Black Hole.

Lady Valerie Solti, widow of the late conductor Sir Georg Solti, was in conversation with federation president Edward Greenfield, and, in the evening, the renowned cellist Julian Lloyd Webber talked to BBC Radio 3's Paul Guinery.
Sunday morning's usual live performance featured the rising star Di Xiao, who delighted her audience with piano music by Scarlatti, Mozart, Schubert, Albeniz, Chopin and Ravel, and an encore of a little known piece by Sibelius.
She will be visiting Kidderminster Library on June 27 to give a recital.
The proceedings ended with Lyndon Jenkins, who showed many examples of where words and music combine.
