Students sample the tough world of work
The Young Enterprise company Blu-genic celebrates its success after getting a taste of the world of business.
The Young Enterprise company Blu-genic celebrates its success after getting a taste of the world of business.

THE cut-and-thrust world of business can be a daunting place for young people, but not for teams of students at The Chase school in Malvern and King's School, Worcester.

Youngsters from the two schools, who run companies through the Young Enterprise scheme, have made it through to the regional final of a national contest after their budding businesses impressed judges at a demanding presentation.

The Young Enterprise Area Board presentation showcased companies from nine schools in Worcestershire. Four were chosen to represent South Worcestershire - Swish, K15, and New Vibe, all from King's School, and Blu-Genic, from The Chase - and will now compete to a secure a place in the West Midlands competition in June.

Kevin Lee, chairman of Young Enterprise South Worcestershire Area Board, said: "We've noticed a definite trend. Our young achievers are building ethical concepts into their company's mission statements, which very much reflects today's corporate business model. "However, what doesn't change is the tireless commitment, enthusiasm and commercial acumen these young people demonstrate. As a retired executive, it's both inspiring and a comfort to think that these young people may one day follow in the entrepreneurial footsteps of local business icons such as Cecil Duckworth."

Blu-Genic won the best presentation cup for the best presentation of the evening, the QinetiQ Cup for the most innovative company, and the Rabjohn's shield for the best financial director.

Selling a range of environmentally-friendly jute carrier bags, they have been very successful and their products are now to be found all over Malvern. At the recent Young Enterprise trade fair at Worcester Guildhall, they sold more than £400 worth of the bags and won the sales and marketing award for work in this area.

John Palmer, link teacher for the group and head of ICT at the school, said: "I am very pleased with the hard work, innovation and dedication shown by our Young Enterprise groups this year. The students have found the experience challenging, personally gratifying and rewarding and they feel they have learnt much from their successes and even more from resolving their differences and problems along the way."
