WHEN it comes to exam success, Worcestershire students have proved they are among the country's best.

Two Worcester pupils - Ellie Hobday from Christopher Whitehead Language College and Peter Swann from Bishop Perowne CofE College - were among the five highest English literature results in the country. Ellie gained nine A*s and two As.

Sarah Higgs from Alice Ottley School not only gained 10 A*s, but also achieved one of the top five German results in the country. Six other pupils at the school got 10 A*s and As.

Among pupils celebrating academic success was Danielle Moyles, of Colwall, who gained 11 A*s. The Malvern College pupil was not alone in clocking up an amazing set of results.

Fellow pupil Alex Engert got 10 A*s and two As, Simon Eaton gained nine A*s and two As and Sam Baylis got nine A*s and two As.

Down the road at The Chantry in Martley, near Worcester, twin brothers were among star pupils.

Jonathan and Thomas Doyle got 11 A* and A grades, along with fellow pupil Malcolm Adams.

At St Mary's Convent School in Worcester, Lucy Caldicott gained 10 A*s and As. The school also revealed pupil Charlotte Fulcher had gained an A* GCSE in Spanish despite being just 11 years old.

At Pershore High School, the star pupil was Thomas Fellows with seven A*s and three As, closely followed by Matthew Smith with seven A*s, two As and a B.

At Blessed Edward Oldcorne Catholic College, Worcester, the highest flyer was Hannah Rothery with 10 A*s and five As and Theresa Hewitt with four A*s, nine As and two Bs.

At King's Worcester, three pupils shared top spot - Lucy Boynett, Hugh Brooks and James Greenwood all got 10 A*s.

Back in Malvern at the Chase, Katie Woolstenhulme and Rosemary Bar both got 10 A*s.

At Nunnery Wood High School, Sharul Dube came top with 10A*s and one A.

At Tenbury High School Jonathan Whitehead got 10 A*s while fellow pupil Katherine Price got five A*s, four As and two Bs.

While at Evesham High School Mary Higgs got eight A* and one A and James Green got six A* and three As.

Alice Ottley School In total, 97.5 per cent of students achieved five or more A*-Cs, with almost 56 per cent of grades A*/A.

Headmistress Morag Chapman said: "I am delighted with these successes - they reflect the hard work and commitment of both students and staff."

Bishop Perowne High Pupils surpassed targets to equal the school's previous best results, with 12 to 15 per cent of pupils gained A*/A in five to 11 subjects.

Headteacher Julie Farr said: "We are delighted. We had very well-rounded students and we wish them well in the future."

Blessed Edward Oldcorne A record year, with 80 per cent of pupils achieving five A*-C grades.

Principal Sean Devlin said the results placed the school among the top 25 per cent in the country. He said: "The results reflect the dedication of the staff and the hard work of pupils with the support of parents," he said.

Chantry High School Twenty per cent of grades were A*/A and 69 per cent of pupils gained five or more A*-Cs (59 per cent including English and maths).

Headteacher Caroline Browne said: "We are very pleased with the results."

The Chase Sixty-nine 69 per cent of students achieved five or more A*-C grades - 61 per cent including English and mathematics.

Kevin Peck, headteacher, said: "These results are outstanding, duplicating the superb outcome in 2003. They respect the enormous amount of collaborative work that goes on involving students, teachers and parents. Our pupils should feel very proud of their excellent achievements."

Christopher Whitehead The school equalled its best ever results, with 59 per cent of students getting five or more GCSEs at A*-C.

Headteacher Neil Morris said: "These results are a testament to parents, staff and, of course, students."

Elgar Technology College In total, 39 per cent of students achieved five A*-C grades and 95 per cent gained at least one A*-G.

Associate headteacher Julia Cook said: "We are really pleased. They have done themselves proud and worked very hard."

Evesham High School Sixty-three per cent got five or more A*-C grades.

Assistant headteacher Gill Brookes said: "This is an uplift on last year and is steadily improving year on year results for the school."

Hanley Castle High School In total, 76 per cent students achieved five or more A*-C grades - 67 per cent including maths and English. Twenty-six per cent of grades were A/A*.

Rob Johnston, deputy headteacher, said: "They are a credit to themselves, their families and their teachers."

The King's School All candidates gained at least five A*-Cs. The overall pass rate for A*-C grades was 97.6 per cent, with 59.4 per cent of grades A*/A.

Headmaster Tim Keyes said: "I am very pleased pupils have once again achieved such fine results."

Malvern College Forty-five per cent of results were A/A*.

Dr Sarah Welch, acting headteacher, said: "We are delighted. The pupils who worked so hard can be proud of their achievements."

Malvern St James Ninety-five per cent of students achieved five or more A*-C grades, with nine students achieving straight A*/A grades.

Headteacher Rosalind Hayes said: "Both girls and staff have worked hard and achieved of their best."

Pershore High School An all-time high of 68 per cent of pupils gaining five A*-C passes.

Headteacher Clive Corbett said: "I would like to congratulate all concerned."

RGS Worcester All candidates achieved five A*-C grades. The overall pass rate (A*-C grades) was 97.3 per cent, with 61.8% of passes being at A*/A grade.

Headteacher Andy Rattue said: "The results are all the more remarkable when you consider how much these students have also achieved beyond the classroom."

St Mary's Convent School All students achieved five or more A*-C grades, with 95 per cent gaining nine or more. Furthermore 78 per cent of all passes were A*/A or B grade.

Headmistress Susan Cookson said: "I am very pleased for all of them and very proud of the school's achievements."

Stourport High School (Language College) A record year with 62 per cent of students achieving five or more A*-C grades.

Headteacher Liz Quinn said: "These are our best ever results and we are really delighted with the students' performances."

Tenbury High School The highest ever results for the school, with 72 per cent of students achieving five or more A*-C grades.

Headteacher Stuart Cooke said: "We are delighted. These excellent results will provide a solid foundation as they leave the high school and build their futures."
