A PET lover and his dog from Worcestershire had a chance meeting with royalty when they went to Bristol for some specialist treatment.

Andy Parmley, of Droitwich, and his dog Harry visited the University of Bristol School of Veterinary Science for an appointment about Harry's skin allergy.

But little did Mr Parmley know that the visit would coincide with a royal visit by the Duchess of Cornwall, who had recently become patron of the site. Mr Parmley, of Coppice Way, said: "When I went there I assumed it would be a normal appointment. But as I drove in I was stopped by security and the whole site was really busy with lots of people in suits.

"As I went in to reception all the staff behind the desk started clapping, and I thought I was late or something. Then they told me I had arrived just before a royal visit and that they were worried that there would be no clients for Camilla to meet, as she had expressed an interest in meeting some people to ask how their pets' treatment had been. It was quite a shock.

"About 10 minutes before she was due, all the press arrived. The ITV West reporter asked if he could do an interview.

"He asked about how I felt when I arrived and how my dog was doing with his treatment and what was wrong with him. He has skin allergies and the department specialises in this.

"By the time Camilla came in, the reception was packed with about 40 people - hospital staff and press. She spoke to some of the staff and then came over and said hello.

"She asked about Harry and what I thought of the hospital and treatment. She also shook Harry's paw which was edited out of the ITV news item. I thought it was the best bit."

The Duchess of Cornwall is the patron of the Langford Trust for Animal Health and Welfare, the aim of which to educate the public about animal welfare.
