We were told the buses could turn
Sir - At the exhibition at Pershore Town Hall in December we queried, among other things, the removal of the turning point for buses half way down Broad Street.
We were assured that a computer programme had confirmed that the buses could turn at the top of Broad Street in one sweep. Most people know, of course, that like calculators, computers will produce facts based on the information that is put in.
One Sunday morning, a quiet time in the town, I saw a bus, a shorter one than the normal buses, attempting to make this manoeuvre and although it was close, the driver did have to reverse in order to make the turn.
This did not amuse the traffic that was held up or had to reverse to give him the space to do this.
If, as was stated by the contractors/council, this computer programme is absolutely correct and it is easily possible to drive a bus around the top end of Broad Street in one sweep, may I suggest that the contractors/council take over the training of the bus drivers so that they can learn how to achieve this?

Well said, Lyn!
Chatting with a passing citizen in Pershore this very morning - and discussing your letter - they made the sensible suggestion that all Council and Town Planners drive an HGV, an Articulated Lorry or some Public Transport for "at least 6 months" - this would give them the true perspective on the real world, that they so sadly lack!
Computers - like statistics - can prove anything and we all know that 87.3% of all statistics are made up!

Thank you Stan, very good points. I had a similar idea last weekend. As well as driving HGV', buses, etc whoever does the plans should also go around the town with blanked out glasses, as if they were blind; then go round the town pushing a wheelchair and finally riding a mobility scooter. Once they have done all of this, they should then go back and redesign the town bearing in mind what they have learnt! There are far too many hazards now in Pershore for the blind and visually impaired, without the added problems for the elderly and the fact that, apart from No8 and the Town Hall, we have lost at least one persons space on the footpaths thanks those daft bollards that will not stop cars from parking on the kerb, especially when No8 advertised the fact that you could get a whole car onto the pavement!
The phrase that comes to mind is 'if they had brains they would be dangerous'!
