Just who are you calling abhorrent?

SIR - In regard to Roger Berry's comments that the people of Gorse Hill had rejected the British National Party and "its abhorrent policies". Can I remind Coun Berry that the BNP polled 21 per cent of the vote in Gorse Hill. He is therefore branding almost a quarter of his constituents as abhorrent.

This is graphic illustration of the contempt with which Labour holds the British people and just how out of touch with public opinion they really are. The British National Party has 10 new councillors. Labour has lost almost 300. Perhaps Mr Berry should look a little closer to home in regards to which political party the British electorate truly finds abhorrent.

Lee Hancock, Evesham.

I have no time for the BNP but this was not the party that got where they are by slagging off other Councillors and waging a really dirty campaign against the Independents on the Council. That Party was New Labour and Roger Berry was the last one to write to this paper regarding the Laylands. I heard not one lie, distortion, allegation or anything from the BNP, that is all I heard from New Labour.

I have no time for the BNP

Dare I ask why?
Posted by: Alan2, Worcester on 9:24pm Thu 8 May 08
Oh! Logic, I am sure that some of the readers of these posts would say that I belong to some extreme group but I really don't. At heart, as my daughter and wife always tell me, I am a big softie, wouldn't say boo to a goose or harm a fly.
My natural inclinations are Conservative but that is by no means guaranteed and the way they have recently performed locally is just deplorable causing me much soul searching. They are content to be second best, lack the killer instinct and are not prepared to put themselves out in order to gain a seat or advantage.
That having been said, whilst many true British people could easily agree with much of what the BNP say's in terms of it's policy and philosophy there are other issues that I find impossible to latch onto. I could never join or support them. I think I have said somewhere before, when a smartly dressed, intelligent person with a deep insight into personal rights and freedoms, fairness and all the intangibles that make up a free liberal democracy, can stand up before a large audience of intelligent people, say that they belong to the BNP and, in a reasoned, tolerant and convincingly pursuasive way get those people to listen and believe that the speaker is credible and has a legitimate opinion and position whether they believe it or accept it or not, then I think the BNP is on the way to making some progress to becoming a "political party" in the accepted sence of the words.
At present they have nobody as far as I am aware that could do this and Nick Griffin cut's a pathetic figure and he certainly could never carry my brief off. The BNP is who they are and I wouldn't voice my innermost opinions of them as I wouldn't on New Labour albeit they are not to far distant from each other in a different sort of way, come to think of it, I might even prefer Nick Griffin to some of those distasteful characters in New Labour and at the top of these would be Ed Balls, Hazell Blears, Harriet Harman and their ilk. Certainly under New Labour with it's immigrant policy the BNP have made progress, they have a Councillor now on the London Assembly (who would have dreamed of it) and nationally I think (but haven't researched it) their share of the vote went up.

Thanks Alan2.

The reason I asked is that having read up and had had BNP election literature before, I had found it difficult to disagree with a lot of what they were saying. This is also true of many other people I have spoken to.

You are right, Nick Griffin is not really credible yet it would seem that all the BNP need, as you seem to concur, is someone who is both credible and articulate in conveying their message. I have read this exact same view in other places as well. Once they find someone able to do this, they will almost certainly gain further support.

It would seem that the BNP's main problem is one of image, but it has to be said that the main political parties go a long way to propagating this image which seems to solely rely on playing the race card. As we are seeing now, more and more people are indeed turning to the BNP, not because they are racist but more along the lines of enough is enough and the country cannot continue in the direction it has been going, particularly with immigration. The problem is that all the main political parties follow the same paths so that doesn't leave a lot of options does it.

Yes the BNP have got a seat on the London Assembly, but it seems that this representative is to be ignored by all other elected parties. I must say, this is hardly Democracy. Whatever you think or chose to believe, the BNP polled more than 5% of the vote and as such, those voters are entitled to be represented. To not allow him to do so is undemocratic and possibly a very dangerous move.

I might even prefer Nick Griffin to some of those distasteful characters in New Labour and at the top of these would be Ed Balls, Hazell Blears, Harriet Harman and their ilk.

I think I have to agree.

I totally agree with most of what you say Logic. The biggest mistake some of the established Political parties - particularly New Labour, will make is to underestimate the growth and attraction of the BNP to disillusioned voters. The second mistake both they, the Conservatives and Liberal Dems will make is to give the cold shoulder to BNP Councillors - the result announcement of the London Mayoralty was an utter disgrace with the main three contenders marching out of the room before all the others could say a word in response to the announcement. In effect they treated them with the utmost contempt and, as you say it is an afront to democracy. What they do by disregarding the BNP Councillor/s is to disenfranchise those that elected him/her. A very dangerous tactic that could well rebound on those that do it.
I feel utterly disenfranchised myself at the moment because I am without a party to vote for. New Labour - who in their right mind would vote for them, Conservatives - lazy losers who insult those they ask to vote for them by not making any effort themselves. Lib Dems, now I must admit I am not as contemptuous of those as I used to be, I don't like Clegg's immigration policy at all but recently Huhne has spoken twice to my knowledge about terrorism and the treatment of terrorist suspects and those convicted of it and I liked what I heard. They are beginning to get some fire in their belly methinks but, short of an earth shattering rebirth, I couldn vote for them. Nobody can take my vote for granted and I think that there are many in the same frame of mind. There are rich pickings here for the BNP I think in today's circumstances because New Labour have let the immigration genie out of the bottle and there is no putting it back.
As you say, with the BNP much of the "antiness" is down to their "image" and if they cleared this up to more respectable appearances I think they could grow by leaps and bounds. One thing is certain, they are not going to go away and their numbers will only increase.

I do not support the BNP. I also do not suppport the Conservatives, the Lib Dems or any of them. I know one thing however, I find this current government the most abhorrant bunch of self-serving, snug, lying sycophants that I can remember. How on earth did people with such obviously limited talents as Jacqui Smith, Hazel Blears etc etc ever get to be cabinet ministers ? Jacqui Smith as Home Secretary is just a joke, if somebody could please explain what qualifies her for this job I'd be pleased to listen. This government is totally discredited, the trouble is there is no other party in the country who would make a huge amount of difference - we are in an age of low achievment and that naturally applies to polititions as well as the rest of us. The talent just isn't there.

Gary, couldn't have put it better myself but you mentioned Hazel Blears and, if anything gets me going it is this woman and others in the Labour Party like her. The one that really makes my blood run cold though is Harriet Harman, then we have Ruth Kelly, Yvette Cooper and, Oh! my god let's really scrape the barrell and drag up Patricia Hewitt - how did that woman ever get into Government. I first knew her as a raggy a....., scruffy down at heel leader of the National Council For Civil Liberties advocating things which I am sure she would hate to be reminded of these days now that she has lost her "outback ozzie" twang and acquired an upper crust, plum in the mouth, Grade 1 listed building accent that makes me squirm on hearing it. The one that realy makes me wear my fingers out climbing up the wall though is Ed Balls, this clown is a Cabinet Minister in the BRITISH GOVERNMENT, he, yes he, GOVERNS US. They don't try and hide the fact, they parade him about in kids infant schools, lording it over 5 and 6 year olds. Whereas any other party, including the Monster Raving Looney's would lock him away and hide him in a cupboard, the Labourites boast of how good he is. Yes, they really do and, what is more, they expect us to believe them. Now he has experience of being in charge of infant schools he is going to be in charge of the Government and country if Brown get's the chop. Oh! my giddy aunt, what has our country become. Can we imagine Balls negotiating with Putin, we would have SMERSH directing traffic in Piccadilly within a week. He is an adviser to Gordon Brown then we wonder why Brown is continually in the fertilizer up to his eyebrows, Balls is the cause of it. This is the man who continually slates Cameron for being a Public School Tory when he himself went to a Public School and, if the rumours are correct, he was a form prefect which gives him a bit more experience to be PM. He comes from a family background that is well on a par with Cameron's and whereas Cameron rides to work on a sit up and beg, Balls and his wife ride to work from his second house in London for which they BOTH claim £22,000 expences on a tandem. What a clown. Blair's babes and Balls, that just about sums up New Labour. You are dead right Gary.
