I no longer collect litter – guess why

SIR - I read with interest the article about residents in Ronkswood being fined for leaving rubbish in black bin bags next to wheelie bins.

As a volunteer litter picker with the Duckworth Trust I often went out within the area I live and picked up litter. It was quite easy to fill up three or four black plastic bags of litter which I then used to take home and put out for collection by the bin men. This was in the days of weekly collection and before the advent of wheelie bins.

With the advent of wheelie bins and all the rules and regulations that went with them I contacted Mike Harrison and explained that I was a volunteer litter-picker and asked would they still be able to collect black bags of litter from my home if left next to wheelie bins? The reply from Mike Harrison was such that I no longer go out and collect litter.

Keith Williams, Worcester.

At the same time litter increases because people dispose of excess rubbish any way they can.
