SCHOOLS across Worcestershire celebrated World Book Day with special guests, fancy dress and a host of other projects.

At Elgar Technology College in Worcester, visitors from the fire and police services, Worcester Wolves basketball team and local businesses talked to pupils about the benefits of reading.

The visitors, all National Reading Champions, spent time chatting to pupils about their favourite books, why it is important to read, and how it can help children later in life.

School librarian Wendy Phelps said: "We are delighted that so many guests have given up their precious time to come and talk to our pupils and enthuse them about reading."

Chief Inspector Matt Mead, of West Mercia Constabulary, was among the guests at the World Book Day event yesterday.

"I think it's great that the pupils get the chance to sit and talk about books and I'm honoured to have been invited," he said.

Firefighter Darren Greenwood, of Worcester's green watch, added: "To be honest I have never been much of a reader but talking to the kids here has been fantastic. It has made me realise how important it is."

At Kempsey Primary School teachers dressed up as characters from children's books and the pupils took part in activities, such as creating storyboards, and writing about their favourite books.

Literacy co-ordinator Sue Lee said: "It is so important for children to enjoy reading. Reading impacts on every part of life, and by making it more enjoyable makes them want to pick up a book."

Miss Lee said pupils at Kempsey were all enthusiastic about reading.
