Recruits take oath of allegiance
SOLDIERS from Worcestershire have helped break a new recruitment record as they prepare to fight for Queen and country.
Seven young men yesterday swore their oath of allegiance to the Queen at a ceremony at Worcester's Guildhall.
Also there were the mayor Councillor Stephen Inman, Major Ken Kennedy, family, friends and recruiters.
The Army has recruited 141 new soldiers in the county in the last year, beating last year's record of 136.
The new recruits are Anthony Newitt, 18, of Evesham, who joins the Parachute Regiment.
Callum White, 17, of Malvern, who joins the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.
Jared Wood, 21, of Upton-upon-Severn; John Loveridge, 16, of Kidderminster, and Roger Talbot, 27, of Evesham, who all join the Royal Corps of Signals.
The Mercian Regiment, which now includes the former Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters, gained two new recruits - Harvey Gines, 18, and Matthew Round, 17, both of Stourport-on-Severn.
Following recent debate about servicemen and women wearing their uniforms, Coun Inman said the soldiers would always receive a warm welcome and should wear their uniforms with pride in the county.
