A DISABLED man who was the victim of an unprovoked attack while feeding ducks on a canal towpath in Worcester has vowed to continue visiting the spot he loves.

Colin Hughes, who suffers from arthritis and relies on a mobility scooter to get about, was punched in the face twice on the path near Perdiswell Sports Centre, off Bilford Road, on Friday, November 2, between 1pm and 2pm, as previously reported in the Worcester News.

Mr Hughes, a retired artist, was unable to get a good look at the two men because they approached him from behind, knocking his glasses off.

He said: “It all happened in less than a minute – he gave me a good clout, I was bruised and cut. I could not believe it and I couldn’t get my mind together.”

One man had his hood up and they had two Staffordshire bull terrier-type dogs.

One of the dogs, which was wearing a chest harness, had jumped into the canal to chase the ducks, prompting Mr Hughes to tell the men to get it out of the water.

Mr Hughes aged 67, of Cranham Court, Warndon, has been regularly using the area to feed the ducks and swans since June.

He said: “I like to go down there for an hour-and-a-half. It’s the only spot along the canal where you get the sun at that time of day.

“I thought they were going to rob me because I had a mobile phone and camera. If the arm on my chair had not been down I would have been in the canal. I can swim but I would never have been able to get out.

"Nobody was about, if it had been the weekend it is always packed. I’m not having something like that ruin my life.”
