RAIN has continued to batter the county for a second day running causing chaos across Worcestershire.

Roads and bridges were closed and schools shut early yesterday as flood warnings remained in place for county rivers.

A flood warning is still in place tonight on the river Avon in Pershore and Evesham while the Environment Agency still had flood alerts in place for the river Severn and river Avon in Worcestershire, Barbourne Brook in Worcester and Bow and Piddle Brook, Pershore.

In Droitwich the river Salwarpe, Elmbridge and Hadley Brooks and their tributaries were also on flood alert.

Worcestershire County Council Highways Teams remained on high alert last night with all 20 maintenance gangs redeployed to deal with the effects of the weather and tree contractors on hand to deal with fallen trees.

Evesham’s Waterside was one of the worst places hit, and Weir Meadow, a caravan park next to the river in the town centre evacuated customers on Wednesday night.

Manager Brian James said: “The park has closed. We evacuated last night at 9pm. All the flotation systems are working so we don’t think there will be any water damage.”

Strong winds in the Vale also caused a large tree to be uprooted and fall into the house of 70-year-old Vicki Thould, who was not in the house at the time.

A man was safely rescued from flood water in Eckington at around 11.20am today.
Meanwhile Pershore Bridge, on the B4084, was closed just before 4pm yesterday after a manhole overflowed into the road and flooded the highway.

Other county bridges closed included Eckington Bridge, Jubilee Bridge and Besford Bridge.
Roads were also shut today including Woodbury Lane, Norton, C2032 which turns into the Plough Road to Tiverton, the B4078 between Eckington and Bredon, Brook Lane in Cropthorne, Willersey Road, Badsey, New Street in Upton-upon-Severn where flood gates were in place, Waterside in Evesham and Hinton Village with the only access road open, Haselor Lane.
Droitwich Spa High School and Sixth Form Centre had been due to hold an open evening at its sixth form tonight but has postponed the event because of the bad weather.

The event will now take place on Thursday, December 6, at 6.30pm.

A number of schools were effected by the floods and closed early.
The rain also caused disruption to bus services and school transport impacting on Evesham, Eckington and Himbleton. For full lists of disruption to schools and public transport visit worcestershire.gov.uk

The weather is expected to improve tomorrow with the Met Office predicting a sunny day with low winds but heavy rain is forecast for Saturday night.
